About this deal

The Astro C40 TR offer practical customization options, and it packs a couple extras that give it a leg up. The niggling quality of life issues and the more frustrating technical issues with phantom inputs and expensive replacement modules don't leave a good impression. Once Sony seemingly resigned itself to sticking with its tried-and-true DualShock design, leaving third-party companies to come up with better options, a number of big brands have tried to crack it with the same success that Microsoft enjoys with its stellar Xbox One Elite. So while I may not have used all four back paddles on the Vantage, I did appreciate the ability to have four additional inputs, and it’s something the Astro C40 TR lacks. If you’re a player who’s spent months or even years using a Scuf Impact or other four-paddle controllers, you’re going to have a hard time adjusting and that might be a deal-breaker.

Each input has a graph that functions like a custom equalizer, letting you slide four sensitivity points up and down to adjust the curve of how sensitive the sticks and triggers are. The handles feature an ergonomic ridged rubberised design that makes it very easy to grip even for those longer gaming sessions and if stress causes you to being to deathgrip the pad. The addition of the UL and UR buttons on the back of the controller are comfortable and really come in handy for some first person shooter games as you can reconfigure them to any button. I have been pulling my hair trying to get the touchpad and gyro to work because right now it only shows up as an Xbox controller even after removing drivers. As for remapping, the C40 has an intuitive and responsive remapping system rivaled only by the Scuf Vantage. You can also adjust the intensity of the pad's rumble on both the left and right sides, and change the brightness of the pad's front-facing LED light. Additionally, the rear buttons are programmable, providing a competitive advantage by allowing players to map essential functions to more accessible locations. Along with the contours and heft, there's a pleasing rubber-like coating and some grooves on the backside of the handles.

Elevate your everyday with our curated analysis and be the first to know about cutting-edge gadgets. It's also concerning that with how deeply recessed the port is, it can be problematic using third party cables, if you wanted a longer or lighter cable. Before you throw it away, consider selling it to Trade in and have the payment sent straight over to you the same day of testing. Given that the modules are by far the most likely components to receive wear, adding complexity to something as simple as the connectors, in a way that is susceptible to small movements affecting the connection, was not a smart choice.

Plus, if you just want to change the thumbstick caps or D-pad (Astro includes a variety of convex and concave options with different heights, as well as a smoother D-pad option), you can do that by simply snapping them off each stick. However, the C40's setup allows you to change up the pad's layout, and Astro says the screwed-in design will help reduce the wear and tear that comes with constantly removing and attaching sticks and D-pads. Thank you Astro for creating such a magnificent product that I will enjoy for many years (I take really good care of my technological property). bucks is a lot of money for a controller, and probably far too much for the average gamer (even ones who dabble in tournament play). I was able to get more than ten hours of playtime on a single charge (it’s graded for 12+), which is a significant improvement over the DualShock 4.I found this design to make it easier to toggle back and forth when playing fighting games like Mortal Kombat 11. This is because The C40 is the Arnold Schwarzenegger unstoppable T800, Terminator of gaming controllers. Whether you prefer concave or domed thumbsticks, or a traditional cross or circular D-pad, the choice is yours. The software also facilitates firmware updates, ensuring that your controller stays up-to-date with the latest features and improvements.
